Old Lahaina Luau
Although it is not something we do often, we do like an occasional luau for some entertainment and traditional Hawaiian food, particularly if we have visitors with us.
The Old Lahaina Luau is generally the best and most traditional of the luaus that I have seen. It is located in Lahaina behind the Lahaina Cannery Mall. When you make reservations (and you should to get a good seat), you should first determine if you want “traditional” seating or not. The traditional seating is around tables close to the ground (Japanese style) and the seating is on pillows. These tables are closer to the stage and tend to have the most authentic feel and closest view; however, not recommended if you have back problems.
When you arrive to the luau you are greeted by the cheerful entertainers and hosts help you relax, take a photo and show you to your table. Local artists have areas setup prior to the luau with crafts to purchase, and often someone is teaching basic luau dancing. If you like, you can also watch them take the Kalua Pua’a (pig) out of the Imu (pit) where it is prepared in the traditional manner with hot rocks and banana leaves. Of course, everyone is up to take pictures of the sunset prior to the luau start.
The luau itself has several costume changes as the stories and song take you through the different periods of the luau in Hawaii. The dinner and show last about 3 hours and you will definitely leave with a full stomach. I hope you enjoy it!

By the way, if you want to get some inexpensive local cuisine, Aloha Mixed Plate is next to the luau area and has some good values. You can hear the luau music in the evening and watch the sunset from the oceanfront seating. http://www.alohamixedplate.com.
If you want a different dining experience (more of a Hawaiian fusion), the Feast at Lele is a great alternative luau experience. http://www.feastatlele.com/
